What is New Media?

 , updated on
New media is media that is native to computers and digital networks such as the internet.

Examples

New media includes things like websites, digital communities, social media, mobile apps, virtual and immersive environments.

The Difference

New media differs from old media such as newspapers and television in that it calls for everyone to participate. This is very different from the old model whereby information is broadcast in one direction from media to audiences.

Why new?

New media emerged with the commercialization of the internet in the 1990s. This is quite a long time ago. However, new media represents a massive change to the way that information, communication, entertainment and commerce is organized and produced. We may be in the early days of this transformation as indicated by how quickly media is still changing.

Digital Convergence

The future of new media may resemble a process of digital convergence. This is a process where many different forms of media become one. For example, movies may begin to resemble video games. Video games may become integrated into real life.

Impact

New media allows everyone to produce and share media and data. This has transformed the world in countless ways as huge volumes of data, information, knowledge, entertainment, news and opinion flow from a large number of sources. For example, the hotel industry was transformed by customer reviews on digital travel sites and competition from apps that allow people to rent out their apartments and houses on a nightly basis. New media has transformed politics, commerce, entertainment, society and culture.
