Direct marketing is the practice of reaching markets by establishing direct relationships with customers. This is a common marketing channel that typically involves reaching out to customers with promotion and advertising. Retail is specifically not considered direct marketing as the two have very different cultures. Direct marketing evolved as a way to avoid the expense and limitations of retail such as the need for locations that customers must physically visit.
